Humans have made braids for thousands of years. In the past, the braid was a means of communication, worn to express status, membership of the tribe, or as a sign of marriage. Often they have been invested with great meaning. For Native Americans they are a symbol of oneness and harmony, and each lock is thought of as the past, the present and the future. Children still braid bracelets for each other as a token of friendship and generosity, and a braided lock of hair is often kept as a memento – whether of childhood or first love.

The Braid is a symbol of unity, a keepsake for preserving tender memories and an expression of love.
